Welcome to a new video series that delves into the art and science of a well-balanced and successful title production philosophy. Drawing upon extensive experience in the title industry, CEO Jeff Bates and COO Andrew Acker uncover a consistent pattern and recipe for success comprising three essential ingredients: people, process and technology.

In our first episode, we discuss the critical role that people play in the title industry and the importance of valuing their time and expertise. We address the common issue of overreliance on individuals without providing the necessary support for their success, which is ultimately unsustainable.

The industry is filled with process-oriented, investigative, curious people who love understanding how things work, what's missing and how to improve it.

They’re lazy in all the right ways. They don’t want to put up with redundancy or do something more than once if they don’t have to. So, how do we create structure around this?

To alter the mindset and truly value the expertise within the organization, we’ll discuss key strategies that can lead to a cultural shift, helping the industry truly appreciate and leverage the critical expertise of its people.

Welcome to Production Perfected: The Recipe for Title Success. This series focuses on what we believe is the perfect blend of people, process, and technology to create perfected production.

Topic one is people. People are critical to any business, especially in title. Expertise is valued in this industry, and experience is essential to quality work. There’s even a designation dedicated to expertise—ALTA’s National Title Professional (NTP).

The challenge is that sometimes companies over-rely on people to get work done at any cost, without setting them up for success. This can lead to long, unsustainable workweeks that don’t truly value expertise. Leaders can avoid this by valuing time, asking the right questions, and opening conversations about what’s not working, where help is needed, and what can improve.

Creating this kind of open environment shifts office culture. When people can safely say, “This process isn’t working” or “How can we make this better?” they feel heard, supported, and resourced. Many title professionals are naturally process-oriented, investigative, and curious—and, in the best way, lazy about doing anything twice that could be automated or streamlined.

Some team members may already fit this profile, while others may just need a shift in direction. When hiring, consider bringing in people from outside the title industry to challenge the status quo and introduce new ideas. This fresh perspective can help improve processes and create long-term efficiency.

For decades, we’ve applied this philosophy by hiring outside the industry, seeking new methods and strategies to strengthen both our own processes and our clients’ success.

People come first. In the next part of the series, the focus will be on process.
