I don’t think any of us could have predicted 2023 in the way it unfolded.
This past year made me think of one of my favorite books of recent years: The Messy Middle by Scott Belsky. While it’s more of a business lifecycle handbook than a traditional book, Belsky provides insight and tools to handle the most overlooked and under-glorified segment of any business journey… the messy middle.
What exactly is the messy middle? It’s that temporary time when everything is harder, iterations take longer and progress is incremental.
Sound familiar?
With proper diligence and some good fortune, staying the course through the messy middle pays off. But Belsky also highlights how and why we should find joy through this period of the journey.
And that is one of my themes for the year: Finding joy in the journey.
Despite the desire for better results, we spent the past year battling the byproducts of high real estate prices, increasing interest rates and waning consumer confidence. While these struggles may have changed our definition of success for this year, they also lay the foundation for a bigger, better 2024!
